Vice President Boakai said government remains a strong partner to the media.
The Liberian Vice President made the commitment Tuesday, May 3, 2016 when he served as Keynote Speaker at program marking the observance of World Press Freedom Day in Voinjama, Lofa County.
Vice President Boakai emphasized: “The Press Union of Liberia (PUL) must set up a media regulatory committee to enhance ethical and professional journalism in the country.”
“The media must be voice of the voiceless by maintaining ethical standards in the performance of its social responsibilities to the public.”
The Press Union of Liberia Tuesday, May 3, 2016joined global partners and friends of journalism in the commemoration of this year’s World Press Freedom Day in Voinjama City, Lofa County.
The 2016 World Press Freedom Day is being observed under the theme, “Promoting a Free Press to ensure sustainable Development in Liberia.”
May 3 of each year is observed globally as World Press Freedom Day, with appropriate programs highlighting the importance of a free press.
Major activities befitting the observance of the Day included a parade, followed by an indoor program, where speeches about freedom and democracy were made.
For the past seven years, the PUL has observed the Day in other parts of the country in line with its decentralization process. Members of the PUL and sympathizers departed Monrovia on Saturday, April 30, for Lofa County to celebrate World Press Freedom Day.
