This week we honestly and objectively profile one of Liberia’s best legal minds and reservoir, who many believed over the years has made significant contributions to the growth and development of the country’s legal system.
Our profile of the week is no other but one of Liberia’s respected and career lawyers, Cllr. Jonathan Fonati Koffa Managing Partner of the International Law Group (LLG), and member of several reputable legal organizations in Liberia and abroad.
‘Counselor Koffa’ as he is affectionately call by many of his peers and admirers has built for himself a sound educational background as Juris Doctor (JD) from the University of North Carolina School of Law, and also Masters of Public Administration (MPA) from the North Carolina University all in the United States from August 1995 to May 1998.
Due to his high level of professionalism, Liberians both at home and broad notably considers him as one of the most respected and nationalistic Liberians who over the years selflessly contributed his expertise to his homeland, Liberia despite of all of the upheavals that came his way from detractors.
Being prepared to equip him academically and professionally, Cllr. Koffa cleverly obtained the Bachelor of Public Administration (Urban Planning Concentration) (Cum Laude) from Shaw University in Carolina the United States, from August 1983 to May 1987.
Our profile of the week who is being speculated in Monrovia and abroad as one of Liberia’s leaned legal minds for his country to take over the Ministry of Justice as Justice Minister and Attorney General of the Republic Liberia due to his wealth of experience is the National Chairman of one of the leading opposition parties, the Liberty Party.
Observers believed this astute Liberian legal expert should be given the opportunity to serve his Country in strengthening the legal system due to his vast experiences in the legal profession.
Speaking further, Liberians who spoke to our staff also said this legal minded Liberian is well equipped and knowledgeable of Liberia’s judiciary system, being exposed to the global system of justice, and human rights must be given the opportunity.
Cllr. Koffa who over the years served his country in several capacities assiduously including the Maritime Service International at the then Bureau of Maritime Affairs as Legal Research and Brief Filing for lawyers from 2008 to 2011. In 2005 to 2008 he served the Renaissance Consulting Company as Senior Research Consultant, performing the duty as Legal Research and Brief Filing lawyers.
After his education in the United States he served as City Manager for the Town of Zebulon, North Carolina where he managed a budget of over US$60 million and was largely instrumental in recruiting the Carolina MudCats minor league baseball team to Zebulon with the construction of a US$5 million dollar stadium. After working with Zebulon he opened a small town law practice and got involved in the peace process in Liberia, first representing the Liberian National Conference in Abuja, Nigeria in 2001 and then the Liberian Unification Party at the Comprehensive Peace Talks from 2002 to 2003 in Accra, Ghana.
Serving his country, Liberia in 1982 to 1983 he served as Executive Assistant to the then Liberian Ambassador to Tokyo, Japan, a position he held with great respect and responsibility. From 2012 to 2014 he served as Energy Counsel to the Minister of Justice, Member of the Board of Directors of the John F. Kennedy Medical Center from 2012 to 2014, Chief External Counsel, Liberia Maritime Authority from 2012 to 23015, and General Counsel, Special Independent Commission of Inquiry of the 2011 November 7th disturbances.
Our profile of the week has written several books including the ‘Land of My Father – A Pictorial Anthology of Grand Kru County, Liberia.
He is married to DamaYekeson-Koffa and the union is blessed with three children.
