The New York City Police Department is reporting a rise in sexual assaults against female taxi passengers.
According to New York One Online news report, recent crime record show 14 out of 166 reported stranger rapes in 2015 were done by "for hire" drivers.
That number is up from 10 in 2014, and nine in 2013.
Police say they see this increase happening among younger women coming home alone late, from a bar or club.
A spokesperson for the Taxi and Limousine Commission released the following statement, "Safety is our top priority, and as always, we work closely with the NYPD to both prevent crimes in TLC-registered vehicles and ensure that incidents are reported and investigated, and that drivers who engage in inappropriate conduct with passengers are barred from providing service. We encourage victims to report incidents to the TLC as well as the NYPD so that we can take swift action.”
The TLC says all registered drivers undergo fingerprint-based criminal background checks.
Police are advising women to travel with a friend.
