The Liberia Revenue Authority (LRA) Wednesday received furniture and equipment worth over US $100,000.00 from the United States Agency for International Development (USIAD) Governance Economic Management Support Project (GEMS).
Presenting the items to the LRA, USIAD-GEMS Chief of Party Victoria Cooper Enchia, said the furniture and equipment are her organization’s technical support to the LRA Decentralized Revenue Collection Window.
She said the items which include IT equipment, office furniture, air conditioners and generators, are intended to support the LRA Revenue Generating Windows at the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Ministry of Labor, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Post and Telecommunication, Ministry of Health, Ministry of Transport, Bureau of Immigration and Naturalization, Forestry Development Authority and the Liberia Business Registry.
Madam Cooper Enchia said the equipment are also intended for the Shopping District of Red Light and Duala, indicating that this brings to 15 the total number of windows supported by USIAD-GEMS.
According to her, others are the Temple of Justice, Ministry of Lands, Mines and Energy, Center for National Documents and Records Agency and Robert International Airport, stressing that the Decentralized Revenue Collection Windows will make it easier for taxpayers to make payments
and reduce congestion at the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning.
The USIAD-GEMS Chief of Party then disclosed that USIAD-GEMS has for the past four years worked with the Ministry of Finance and Development Planning to support government’s effort to integrate Asycuda into the administration system and enhance revenue collection at different locations.
She defined Asycuda as a computerized custom management system that covers most foreign trade procedures. Madam Cooper Enchia pointed out that the system handles manifestos and customs declaration according to procedures and generates trade data that can be used for statistical analysis.
Receiving the items LRA Commissioner General Elfreda Tamba, lauded USIAD-GEMS for the donation and described USAID as a “Reliable Partner” in government’s implementation of its reform agenda under the Agenda for Transformation (AFT).
She indicated that the Liberia Revenue Authority was established to enhance revenue collection; revenue administration; institute tax policies that support economic growth; support the national budget; and deepen and widen the tax net, and promised that the authority will do its best to live up to its mandate.
Commissioner Tamba then assured the USIAD-GEMS delegation that the LRA would utilize the equipment for the intended purpose.
