LIBERIA: Student Group Petitions Legislature

The Montserrado County Student Union has petitioned members of the House of Representatives to ensure that authorities of the Ministry of Education maintain the ongoing February academic calendar up to November 2015 and reopen schools in January 2016.

In the petition read by the president of the group, Mohammed Donzo, the students said the promotion of students without the completion of class requirements will mess up the Liberian educational system even more.

The students noted that the February academic calendar was approved by the President in consultation with the National Legislature, despite the Government’s failure to subsidize private schools to help reduce the economic hardship parents as well as students are facing.

Receiving the petition, the Chairman of the House Committee on Education, Grand Gedeh County Representative Matthew Zaza, urged the students to remain law- abiding as their petition will be looked into by the relevant authorities.

He told the students to consider the ongoing crisis in the country’s educational sector as a major problem that everyone must help to find a solution to.
