UNFPA Pledges Support To Liberia’s Health Sector

The Officer- in-Charge of the United Nations Fund for Population Activities (UNFPA) has pledged his organization’s support to the Liberian Government in its strive  to build a functional health system in the country.

Dr. Oluremi Sogunro noted that a functional health system for equitable, efficient and sustainable delivery of basic health services will strengthen and improve health services in the country.

Dr. Sogunro made the pledge Thursday when UNFPA in collaboration with the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and partners launched a National Condom Promotion Campaign under the theme: “Use Condom , Stay Safe” at the Monrovia City Hall.

He indicated that condom is the only effective technology that would prevent HIV and other sexually transmitted diseases currently, noting that it is critical to preventing sexually transmitted diseases and promote safer sex practices in Liberia.

He quoted  Liberia’s Demographic Health Survey for 2013 as indicating that condom usage in Liberia stood at 33% with women representing  22% and men 45%, while condom usage among both women and men who have multiple sexual partners stood at 19 % of women and 23% of men.

Dr. Sogunro recommended that a nationwide condoms usage promotion campaign be conducted in Liberia to increase condom utilization to promote safer sex among the population.- LINA
