Liberian Govt. Arresting Perpetrators Of GVL Mayhem, Says Information Minister

The Government has begun arresting for prosecution all those responsible for the mayhem at the Golden Veroleum facilities in Butaw, Sinoe County, Information Minister Lewis Brown has disclosed.
On Tuesday, May 26, violent demonstrators thronged the facility of GVL in Butaw taking and holding several employees of the entity hostage and vandalizing and looting the equipment and properties of the company.
Brown said such mayhem, looting and destruction, which occurred on the GVL Plantation, will not go unpunished, adding that government will also arrest home owners found in possession of properties belonging to the company.
The Ministry of Justice has also been instructed to impose the additional charge of economic sabotage against the perpetrators wherever applicable, Minister Brown said at a special statement at the Ministry of Information Thursday.
According to Brown, a massive search and seizure operation for properties belonging to the company has been launched, noting that the relevant authorities have also been directed to work with the GVL to conduct a full assessment of the damage done to the concession.
Brown declared that when determined and agreed, the cost of the assessed damage will be offset by the social and/or county development fund of Sinoe County, consistent with the practice of the administration of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf.
Meanwhile, Brown has pointed out that while government takes seriously its commitment to all international protocols, it will not accept the abuse of said protocols, especially when it undermines sovereign duties and responsibilities thereby making it difficult for government to meet the needs and fulfill the expectation of its people.
