The Women and Children Protection Section (WACPS) of the Liberia National Police has recorded 2,267 cases of violence against women from all WACPS units across the country covering the period January to November 2014.
Of the total number of cases, 382 were sexual and gender based violence, including rape, statutory rape, gang rape, corruption of minor, sexual assault and sodomy.
Of the 382 Sexual Gender based violence cases, 114 were sent to court, while 268 are pending investigation. He said rape against children is very high, accounting for 85 percent of survivors between the ages of 3 to 16 years or even younger.
Making the disclosure at the Ministry of Information regular press conference in Monrovia on Thursday, the head of the Women and Children Protection Section of the LNP, Madam Vero Manly, said 111 of the total number of cases were domestic violence.
She indicated that the domestic violence cases range from persistent non-support, simple assault, aggravated assault, bigamy and terroristic threat and that of these cases, 233 were sent to court, 216 pending investigation, while 559 were withdrawn.
Manly further disclosed that 760 of the total number of cases of violence against women are juvenile-related offenses, including Lost and found, Run away, Endangering child welfare, and interfering with child custody.
According to her, of this number 108 were sent to court, 216 are pending investigation, while 436 were withdrawn.
