The United Nations Development Program (UNDP) has donated five double-cabin pickups to the Judiciary for use by public defenders in five counties.
Presenting the vehicles at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia Wednesday, UNDP Country Director Kamil Kamaluddeen said the vehicles are intended for Maryland, Sinoe, Grand Kru , Grand Gedeh and Margibi counties.
Kamaluddeen assured that UNDP will continue to work with the government to strengthen its justice system, and urged the public defenders to use the vehicles for the intended purpose.
Receiving the car, Deputy Coordinator of the Public Defenders Elijah Cheapoo said the vehicles will help curtail some of the inconveniences public defenders face in the performance of their duties.
In remarks at the presentation ceremony, Chief Justice Francis Korkpor advised the public defenders to take proper care of the vehicles.
The Public Defender is a government lawyer who provides free legal service to individuals who cannot afford a lawyer.
