Russians Linked To Defrauding Liberian Government Of Millions In Taxes

Investigation conducted by the GNN has discovered that some Russians who came to Liberia few years ago under the pretext of investing in the Country’s mineral sector have reportedly invaded the payment of taxes and are residing in what is considered a hideout, dubiously carryout mining.

According to investigation, the Russians are operating two companies separate companies, the Lofa Minerals and Modern Minerals taken out of Liberia countless number of gold, diamond and other pressure stones without paying taxes to the Liberian Government.

GNN investigating journalists also discovered these purported investors are being financially fueled by one of Russia financial gurus, Valery Zhmakin who is said to be the Chief Executive Officer of these unregistered companies.

An employee of the Ministry of Lands, Mines and energy, Mr. C. Peter Ballah is aiding these Russians to duped the Liberian government of its needed revenue for over four years, and has also vowed to protect these Russians, identified as Oleg Luzhnov head of the Lofa Minerals Corporation and one Roman who is the head of Modern Minerals.

GNN investigation also learnt that these purported Russian companies reportedly sent out of Liberia over 350 pieces of diamond during the period of mining in the country and only reported 2.35 carats to the Liberian government.

Source at the Land, Mines and Energy Ministry told our reporter that there is nothing being noticed on the payment of taxes by these Russians Companies to the Liberian Government.

When our reporters visited the hideout of one the Russians, Roman, he confirmed their involvement in mining, but refused to disclose the payment of taxes to the Liberian government. Investigation continues.
