SPORTS: Germany win World Cup

Germany were crowned world champions for the fourth time as Mario Gotze's extra-time winner beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final.

Gotze demonstrated perfect technique and commendable calm to chest down Andre Schurrle's pass and sweep in a left-foot finish with the prospect of a penalty shootout only seven minutes away.

Argentina, with skipper Lionel Messi looking subdued despite flashes of his talent, could not respond and Germany claimed their first World Cup since they beat the same opponents in Rome 24 years ago.

The success means Joachim Low's side have become the first European team to win the trophy in South America.

Gonzalo Higuain wasted Argentina's best chance in the first half while Germany defender Benedikt Howedes hit the post with a header seconds before half-time.

She used the occasion to appreciate and highlight the achievements of several women leaders in Liberia including President Ellen Jonson Sirleaf, Christina Tarr, Mriram Fofana, and a list of sever others for contributing to the peace the country is now experiencing.

Madame Pealey also commended the market women of Liberia for their role played in returning peace to country, not leaving out   Ambassador Julie Endee who she described as a symbol of peace in Liberia; evident by the skills she used to preach peace messages through music.

She emphasised the need for the country’s younger generation especially the women  not to  merry make and live in the fantasy of luxuries at the expense  of working hard for education, career, market business and vocational training.

Madame Pealey further stressed the need for every citizen of the country to   remain focus in keeping the peace; adding that ‘those who forget the past are bound to repeat it’

According to her, the Unity Party led government of President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf is making efforts   to ensure the sanity of the peace, and it was necessary for everyone to begin what she called walking the work to peace and refrain from acts of violence as the war days are over.
