President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf has donated a 22-seater Higer bus for the Liberia Amputee Football & Sports Association (LAFASA) in recognition of the many successes scored while representing the country on the international stage.
The Liberian leader said she’s pleased with the performance of the amputee team and that they deserve the donation.
According to an Executive Mansion release, President Sirleaf made the comments when she presented the bus to representatives of LAFASA in response to their appeal to her for transportation. She made the donation at her temporary office at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Tuesday, May 13.
“This team has always moved Liberia to higher heights when bearing our flag,” she reminded the team in a joyous mood, adding, “They have always done well during difficult periods, especially commuting from one place to the other in preparation of these games.”
During the presentation of a soccer trophy won in Nairobi, Kenya last year, the LAFASA appealed to President Sirleaf to assist them with transportation to ease their movement as a team, especially for practice sessions.
The Liberian leader, who promised to provide an operator for the bus, encouraged the leadership of the team to arrange local and international matches which she said could be used to raise funds for the upkeep of the vehicle.
Receiving the bus, the president of the Association Melvin Goteh expressed joy and happiness to President Sirleaf for being concerned about the team and promised to use the vehicle wisely as they continue to carry the flag of the country.
Mr. Goteh said the donation has further strengthened them in defense of the country in future competitions. He promised that the Association will win more laurels on behalf of the country.
The Association’s president used the occasion to challenge other compatriots to follow the good example of President Sirleaf to assist the team. “Now that the President has given us the bus, we like to call on other well-meaning Liberians to help with the maintenance cost through corporate sponsorship,” Mr. Geteh said.
