LIBERIA: Four Farmers Burnt To Death In Nimba

Four sugarcane farmers were burnt to ashes when a dilapidated hut collapsed on them in Lugbeyeeslon Village, Gbwouar Chiefdom, District-2, located 25km outside the provincial capital Sanniquellie in Nimba County.

The farmers, all females, who met their fate on Thursday, January 9, have been identified as Yei Sannie, 37; Yah Mamie, 32, Yah Sannie, 58 and three-year-old Zepululay.

According to information gathered from the scene, six adult females and two kids had gone to cultivate sugarcane when darkness fell, leaving them to spend the night in a hut loaded with some 230 bundles of seed rice.

While asleep the hut caught fire and collapsed, killing four of the occupants of the hut.

The survivors have been identified as Ma Gonyon Nohn Mussahn, 19 and her daughter Monica Mussahn, 20-month old girl.

The survivors were taken to the Sanniquellie hospital for medical checkup.

The 19-year-old survivor told a police investigation that she woke up in the middle of the night to urinate and while outside saw the blazing fire and then the hut collapse suddenly.

Meanwhile, the ashes of the four casualties have been buried at the site of the disaster.

The Criminal Investigation Detachment of the Liberia National Police in Nimba County is still investigating the matter.
