Morocco: Reporter Gets a Three Months Sentence
A Casablanca court rendered its verdict last Thursday in the case against reporter Ali Amar by his former partner, Sophie Goldring. The founder of the defunct publication "Le Journal Hebdomadaire, was sentenced to three months suspended sentence.
After the trial, the former partner of Ali Amar, Sophie Goldring, told the media that she is "relieved" because She "does not want to be responsible for his imprisonment". Ali Amar said it was "an incoherent and an unfair trial, and with political motivations". He adding that he will appeal the verdict.
Ali Amar was previously arrested following a complaint filed against him by Sophie Goldring. She accused him of stealing a laptop and a check in the amount of 20,000 dirhams. The reporter, who denied the charges, said he was in possession of an invoice showing that the computer in question belongs to him, but it was apparently not enough for to court to clear him.
Amar is the author of Mohammed VI: The Big Misunderstanding ( “Mohammed VI, Le grand malentendu” ), a critical book that was published in France in 2009 and was banned in Morocco. He continues to write on controversial subjects.
