Both were 30 kilometres northwest of Levin, around 100 kilometres north of Wellington.
Monday’s earthquake came as Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern gave a live interview.
“We’re having a bit of an earthquake here,” Ms Ardern said in an early morning interview with Newshub’s AM Show from Parliament.
