LIBERIA: HOR Takes its Traditional Easter Break  – Reloads Intent to Buttress GOL COVID-19 Fight

Speaker Bhofal Chambers

The House of Representatives last Tuesday adjourned its regular session and has taken its traditional Easter break which runs for two weeks, but will assemble this Thursday, April 8, 2020 for legislative business to derive a resolution on the State of Emergency declared by the President of the Republic of Liberia, Dr. George M. Weah.

The decision for adjournment was reached in plenary session Tuesday, when the Speaker of the House of Representatives, Dr. Bhofal Chambers acknowledged a motion which was subsequently accepted by the body for the adjournment. The break is expected to last from April 6-21, 2020, thereafter the House would have resume for regular sessions, prior to the declaration of the State of Emergency by President Weah.

The Speaker Dr.Chambers, presenting his charge for the Easter break, admonished his colleagues to keep directly in touch with their respective constituents as their people look to them for direction.

The Speaker furthers that at present, Liberia, like many countries around the world, is facing a serious threat as the Novel Coronavirus or COVID-19 rages unabated across the globe.  He says, as the virus zooms to an alarming height, it was about time legislators share with their constituents and the general public some preventive tips, including, the washing of hands with running water and soap often, adhering to the rules of social distancing by 6-feet, avoiding outing activities in crowded places, paying attention to the family, especially the kids and the elderly and by being law-abiding.

On other aspects, Speaker Chambers asserts that during this Coronavirus period the time for societal reconciliation, enhanced democratization and economic reconstruction in line with the national agenda is now more than ever before.

The Speaker has however proffered the need to set up several legislative committees to coordinate with the Executive and work with well-meaning partners to transform Liberia into an oasis of hope, economic prosperity, peace, stability, unity and national happiness.
