PART I: Is The LD35 Billion Banknotes Already Printed, Arrived In The Country? GNN Investigates

Sources closed to the GNN has revealed that the much publicized printing of the Thirty-Five Billion Dollars banknotes which was requested by the Executive to the Legislative has allegedly been printed already and is currently in the country via the China Union.

According to GNN financial sources, the banknotes in question were printed in China under the auspices of two Lebanese businessmen names withheld, was brought into the country on the 19th of August, 2019 are reportedly been stored at the headquarter of the China Union  in Monrovia.

The Liberian government earlier requested Crane AB, a Swedish firm to print the money, but Crane AB in its communication requested the government that the Financial Intelligent Unit (FIU) be contacted if the banknotes are to be printed by its entity.

Early this month (September 2019) the Liberian leader, President George Weah wrote the Legislature through the Senate’s Committee on Banking and Currency requesting the lawmakers to approve the printing of new Liberian banknotes in the tone of L$35 billion. The money, according to the President, will be infused into the economy when printed.

Article 34 ‘D’ of the Liberian Constitution gives power to the Legislature to levy taxes, duties, imports, exercise, and other revenues, to borrow money, issue currency, mint coins, and to make appropriations for the fiscal governance of the Republic.

The GNN in its bid to gather the actual facts surrounding this latest development made some contacts with several institutions, including the China Union office in Monrovia, as to the facts of the matters, but instead, the management remained tight- lip on the issue.

Efforts by the GNN to contact the President Pro-Temporal of the Liberian Senate, Grand Kru County Senator, Albert Chie on this issue proved unsuccessful last Friday, as our reporter was told the Senator was busy, and could not be reached.

Investigation continues.
