LIBERIA:LMA Supports Wash Promotion In All Markets

The National Vice President of the Liberia Marketing Association (LMA), Mr. Abraham Barchue, Sr. says LMA is very much interested in the development and promotion of water, sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Programs, most especially its component of solid Waste management in the country.

He said LMA’s sanitation and hygiene including solid waste programs cover nationwide because the various market grounds must be WASH friendly. And so we attached great importance to the cleanness of our markets. Beside the marketers, government officials, international guests and foreign diplomats are either visiting or buying from our market grounds.

The LMA Vice President Abraham B. Barchue made the disclosure recently in an exclusive interview with the WASH Media Network at the LMA Headquarters on U.N.Drive in Monrovia.

According to him, anything that is unhygienic that occurs in our market has the propensity to spread like a wide fire, and so the LMA management was making sure  that the various market places must be kept cleaned at all times. “This is so because food contamination is very dangerous and it could sweep out a whole population just from a single market place not being cleaned and hygienic”, he added.

Mr. Barchue regrettably noted that LMA finds itself between scissors because nearly all of its major market grounds are seated within densely populated communities where the market grounds are being misused as dumpsites for both the communities and marketers for several decades now in the country.

Mr. Barchue confessed to the WASHMedia Network that the garbage or solid waste stockpiled or littering on market grounds and its environs in Montserrado county are the creations of both the marketers and the nearby communities, thus LMA entered into MOU with MCC and PCC to help remove stockpiled solid waste from the market grounds and its environs in an effort to keep the market places cleaned and hygiene-friendly.

According to him, the MOU with MCC and PCC have been working well until one-year leadership crisis from August 28, 2018 to August 19, 2019 eclipsed the entire operations and existence of LMA in legal battles which was recently brought under control through a mandate of the Supreme Court of Liberia.

“We are saddened that during that one year crisis period LMA was unable to remit anything to the MCC neither PCC. But this is an understandable fact that LMA was not operating at its full strength. So now that the LMA leadership is back, we in management do believe that we will make good our MOU promises made to MCC and PCC to buttress their tedious but laudable efforts of keeping our markets and cities cleaned and hygiene-friendly,” quips VP Barchue.

He said when his leadership was out of office, they were in sympathy with both MCC and PCC for effective removal of garbage in market grounds and nearby communities without needy resources because removing solid waste is capital intensive. He hoped for stronger partnership that will help re-enforce ongoing efforts  to keep our cities cleaned.

Mr. Barchue disclosed plans that the LMA management would shortly request meeting with the managements of MCC and PCC to strengthen their partnership, adding “We are strong partners, MCC and PCC need LMA as much LMA needs them for the betterment of all.”

The WASH Media Network quotes LMA Veep Barchue as saying that the managements of MCC, PCC alone with their development partners deserve National honors for their passion and redemption Monrovia and Paynesville cities from recent solid Waste terror, stressing that solid waste management is very much tedious, expensive and capital intensive.

He further revealed that management of markets in various counties and leeward cities have ever since been already mandated by  LMA’s national leadership to enter into Memorandum of understanding (MOU) with either the city governments or solid waste service providers within their areas to help remove their stockpiled garbage or solid waste from the market ground in helping to keep the market cleaned and WASH friendly.
