LIBERIA: Mayor Koijee Vows To Stage ‘Counter Protest’ Against COP

The Chairman of the youth Whig of the ruling Coalition for Democratic Change (CDC), Jefferson Koijee has publicly vowed to mobilize able body men of the CDC to counter staged a protest against the Council of Patriots (COP) if any attempt is made for the COP to stage any further round of protest against the Government.

Addressing reporters at the ruling party headquarters yesterday, Mr. Koijee who is also the Mayor of the City of Monrovia in an aggressive posture said his men are already prepare to counter act the COP in any further protest, the group he described as not being in the interest of the Liberian people.

Police and protesters clashing

Early this week, the Liberian police clashed with hundreds of people who took to the streets of the capital Monrovia to protest against corruption and price hikes under the CDC-led government; the police fired tear gas to prevent the protesters on Capitol Hill, while the protesters hurled stones and bottles at officers. According to report, at least five people were arrested during the rally.

The COP recently announced a renewed and continued protest from Wednesday July 31th which was initially planned on July 24th, but was extended following an intervention of the United States embassy near this capital, the protest is in the second major rally since thousands gathered in early June.

Last month, COP gave Weah a string of demands, including improving human rights and eradicating corruption. It also called for the prosecution of individuals over financial problems at the Central Bank of Liberia (CBL).

According to the International Monetary Fund (IMF), inflation has risen and growth has declined since Weah came to power in January 2018.
