LIBERIA: Huge Consignment Of Drugs Expected Soon – Health Minister

(LINA) – In the wake of complaints about the lack of drugs and essential supplies at clinics and hospitals, Health Minister Dr. Wilhelmina Jallah has disclosed that a total of eight containers of drugs are expected to arrive in the country at the end of April for onward distribution to health facilities.

She also disclosed that another consignment of drugs is expected to be in the country around May to compliment the April supply, adding that the Ministry of Health will ensure that it puts stringent measures into place to ensure that supplies are carefully monitored to ensure that they are used appropriately.

Several residents of Monrovia, as well as Gbanga, Bong County have complained in recent days about the shortage of essential drugs as well as fuel to run the daily activities of key government hospitals.

The shortage of fuel, according to some residents and users of the Phebe Hospital in Gbanga (also a referral hospital), has overtime posed challenges to the hospital as doctors are unable to perform important surgical procedures during night hours.

Jallah, who spoke Thursday at the Ministry of Information regular press conference in Monrovia, underscored the need for thorough monitoring of hospital supplies, noting that this will help the MoH to determine how the supplies are used or distributed by hospital authorities.

The MoH official disclosed that the current leadership of the Ministry inherited a huge debt from the past government, adding that as the result of the debt burden some drugs and fuel vendors are unable to supply their goods to the Ministry, posing serious challenge to the health sector.

Among other things, Jallah noted that the MoH is working to ensure that Liberians attain the highest possible standard of health and medical treatment throughout the country.

She maintained that the entity is committed to the provision of accessible health services of good quality and to ensure the distribution of these services to all citizens.
