The German government on Wednesday issued sharp criticism of the seven far-right Alternative for Germany politicians who traveled to Syria this week to “get a better picture of the situation on the ground.”
“Every day the Syrian regime shows inhumane actions,” government spokesperson Steffen Seibert said, adding that the suffering of civilians in Idlib, Aleppo and East-Ghouta is “a suffering that [Syrian] President [Bashar al-] Assad is commanding or accepting,” according to a Spiegel report.
“Those who court this regime are disqualifying themselves,” Seibert said. A spokeswoman for the foreign office said the ministry was not informed of the AfD visit ahead of time.
