U.S. Based Liberian Playwright, Rabbi Gbaba Writes Open Letter To Liberians, Endorses Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boakai

Rabbi Prince Joseph Tomoonh-Garlodeyh Gbaba, Sr., Ed. D.

Dear Citizens of Liberia and Friends of Liberia from across the Globe:

As national playwright of Liberia for the past forty-three years, I kept historical and cultural records of Liberia and Liberians and accordingly reflected what I observed and experienced personally in my literary work and theatrical performances as an individual and as Founder and Executive Director of Dehkontee Artists Theatre, Inc. (DATI).

Today, I do not speak as an executive of a nonprofit organization but as a senior natural born citizen of Liberia and as a playwright charged with the challenge and responsibility to present the truth to the Liberian people and the world, regarding the hegemony of Liberia and the direction we should take to preserve our historical and cultural heritage.

Against this backdrop, I have decided to endorse forthwith the candidacy of Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boikai as the next President of Africa’s oldest Democratic Republic with the firm mandate to end rebel activities in Liberia and ensure the reinstatement of genuine rule of law in post war Liberia.

Liberia Is a Blessed Land Being Cursed Due to Rebel Activities against God and Humans

Liberia is a land blessed by Almighty God and our Patriarchs and Matriarchs from the beginning of time to the present. Liberia is the “Israel” of the Black Race, the Promise Land of peace and self-rule God promised his chosen ones long ago. That was why Liberia was never colonized on the continent of Africa because God protected us from the encroachment of colonialists during the scramble for land in Africa. For this reason, Liberians have always enjoyed liberty and freedom from the beginning of time until December 24, 1989 when the rebel incursion began in Butuo, Nimba County, twenty-eight years ago today.

Further, Liberia has always been a haven where Blacks and different races of the world fled for refuge when they were besieged by warlords and terrorists, or tyrants. But today, on the contrary, Liberia is being cursed because of rebel activities.

Today our once peaceful Liberia is now the haven of warlords and those who commit atrocities against humanity with impunity, and they can roam freely and commit more violence under the watch of international peacekeeping troupes backed by the United Nations, African Union, European Union, local and international human rights organizations, and representatives of governments from around the world. Sad to say, Liberia is now a troubled spot on the West Coast of Africa!

Today, Liberia is the recruiting ground for rebel activities and the destabilization of the sub region because those who perpetrated the atrocities (such as the likes of Ellen Johnson Sirleaf and her supporters) under the watch of the American government, the United Nations, African Union, and ECOWAS, are still roaming the corridors of power in Liberia without being arrested or criminally charged for the crimes they committed. Thus, this is perpetuating violence and glamorizing war crimes in Liberia, which is not in the best interest of Liberia youths and all citizens of Liberia.

The Design of “Messy Education” To Increase Illiteracy Rate in Liberia and Create an Unconscious Generation of Liberian Youths!

Liberian leader, President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf

Mrs. Sirleaf, a ‘Harvard University graduate’, instituted a “Messy education” policy over the past twelve years to increase the illiteracy rate, brain drain in Liberia, and create an unconscious generation of Liberian youths. As you and I know, a “messy education” or little learning is a dangerous thing for the brain. It makes you subconscious or unconscious of yourself and the world in which you live.

It makes you to hate yourself and the others around you but to appreciate foreigners and ideas that are not original to your home environment. Against this backdrop, Mrs. Sirleaf deprived our children and grandchildren and citizens of Liberia access to equality of efficient educational opportunities, as well as good health care, good road networks, hospitals, clinics, basic utilities like safe pipe borne drinking water, electricity, and other necessities of life, so that Liberians may be depressed and live substandard lives.

Moreover, Madam Sirleaf made it a deliberate attempt to demolish traditional institutions such as the Kendeja National Cultural Center that served as a center for the preservation of Liberian history and culture and a great tourist attraction. Her intent was to prevent Liberians from knowing who they are, from whence they have come, and where they should head in the future.

Mrs. Sirleaf purposefully closed down Kendeja to prevent Liberians from celebrating their rich and diverse cultural heritage. She firmly did so to create a generation of ill-prepared and ill-informed Liberian youths whose brains would be damaged with distorted information about themselves and their country, and that would know nothing about their cultural heritage other than war and violence and glamorizing Liberian warlords.
Liberians Are Continuously Voting for Liberian Warlords Due to a Disease Called Stockholm Syndrome

Liberians are continuously voting for Liberian warlords due to a disease called Stockholm Syndrome. According to the Wikipedia definition of Stockholm Syndrome, it is a disease caused by traumatic experiences such as the atrocities and heinous crimes Liberians witnessed during the Liberian Civil War.

It is a condition that causes hostages to develop a psychological alliance with their captors as a survival strategy during captivity, like the way the rebels have held Liberians hostage for the past twenty-eight years. These feelings, resulting from a bond formed between captor and captives during intimate time spent together, are generally considered irrational considering the danger or risk endured by the victims.

Stockholm syndrome consists of “strong emotional ties that develop between two persons where one person intermittently harasses, beats, threatens, abuses, or intimidates the other, as in the case of Liberian warlords and former combatants using their authority to ransack the coffers of Liberia with impunity, and to abuse the human rights of Liberians by denying them good health care facilities, efficient schools, good road networks, good communication systems, solid agricultural programs to empower Liberians to feed themselves instead of importing their staple diet, etc.

For this reason, Mrs. Sirleaf and former Liberian warlords who are in positions of public trust have conditioned Liberians to fear them, thus creating electorates she would macro-manage to cast their votes not based on their conscience or the platforms of candidates but based on blind allegiance and the Stockholm Syndrome Liberians are undergoing because of the atrocities Liberian warlords meted out against unarmed civilians in the past, including the continued presence of Liberian warlords in their daily lives as key decision makers in the executive, legislative, and judicial branches of government in post war Liberia.

Fortunately for Sierra Leoneans, this situation does not exist in neighboring Sierra Leone where the citizens of that friendly African nation ridded their society of war criminals the likes of Foday Sankor and his supporters, to enable Sierra Leoneans to start a new political landscape and slate. Thanks for the intervention of the British in trying, convicting, and imprisoning Charles Taylor for fifty years!

The Minority (10%) Elites Using ‘Divide and Rule’ Tactics to Rule the Majority (90%)

Mrs. Sirleaf has broken the tradition whereby the Standard Bearer would render financial, material, and moral supports to her successor, in this case, Vice President Joseph Boikai. Instead, she has elected to openly support Mr. George Weah, a member of the so-called CDC ‘opposition party’, which for the past twelve years had majority of its partisans (mainly from the “Country” or Indigenous sect of the Liberian society) as lawmakers, but they failed to pass a bill to ratify the Liberia Truth and Reconciliation Commission’s (TRC) report that calls for the establishment of a war crimes court for Liberia, the banning of certain Liberian politicians from participating in politics for thirty years, including Mrs. Sirleaf and others connected with financing and abetting the rebel incursion and the destruction of human lives and properties. The TRC report also calls for the prosecution of Liberian warlords and their cohorts.

Accordingly, Mrs. Sirleaf used the age old True Whig Party strategy of elites who constitute 10% of the Liberian people to manipulate and use the Majority (90%) who include mostly semi-literate and illiterate Indigenous Liberians and Americo-Liberian and Congor citizens, to perpetuate themselves in power. This was why she convinced Weah to merge with the National Patriotic Party (NPP), an offshoot of the National Patriotic Front of Liberian (NPFL) that she cofounded and financed to wage war on the Liberian people, just to continue her rebel agenda in Liberia.

Vice President Boikai Is the Better of the Two Candidates

Liberian Vice President, Joseph Nyuma Boakai now opting for the presidency

In my opinion and based on an assessment of the two candidates in view of their past records and present ability to rule Liberia, and in consideration of their intellectual capacities, V.P. Boakai is the better of the two candidates.
V.P. Boikai has a clean public service record as an experienced and educated Indigenous Liberian whose people are in the majority but that Mrs. Sirleaf cannot pull by the nose for the reason that he is able to articulate his own views nationally and internationally without being coached by an “advisor’ about what to say to his audience—whether national or international.

Thus, it is understandable Mrs. Sirleaf would want to sideline V.P. Boakai to support a puppet and mere high school dropout from Wells-Hairston High School on Mechlin Street in Monrovia, Mr. George Weah, who is also a member of the Majority Indigenous sect she can pull by the nose to continue the True Whig Party’s strategy of ‘divide and rule’. This has been the practice that kept the True Whig Party in power for more than a century, whereby the Minority (10%) continuously ruled the Majority (90%) in Liberia by sowing seeds of discord in among the Majority or “Country” people.

Let Us Reverse the Trend of Decision Making in Post War Liberia to Save Liberia from Bloodshed and Lawlessness!

My fellow Liberians and friends of Liberia from across the globe. I am appealing to all of you for your support. I am asking you to help us reverse this ugly historical trend by not voting into power those who killed our mas and pas. Instead, we should vote in favor of lasting peace and national unity in Liberia.

We should vote in favor of a democracy where the decision of the Majority prevails. However, if the Majority should rule Liberia, it must be a “Country” or Indigenous Liberian who is academically prepared and competent to represent all of us nationally and internationally, and not an “Uncle George” who has betrayed the ideals and principles of the CDC for monetary gains.

It cannot be someone who secretly in the dark joined rebels who fought against the interests of those whose political support Mr. Weah enjoys. In addition, we do not need a “Country” man or woman whose speeches must be written by someone else and coached in the background how to deliver his message to the Liberian people or the world.

Rather, we want a leader with an independent mind, with good communication skills, and who is savvy about the global conversations regarding good governance and rule of law. Also, we do not want a leader who will be threatened by the presence of brilliant Liberian intellectuals who may not agree with his naïve thoughts.

Preferably, we want a national leader that will be open to contrary views other than his, and that will be open to professional recommendations from learned Liberian scholars, scientists, and academicians regarding the reconceptualization of the Liberian educational system.

We want a national leader that will respect the traditional history and culture of Liberia and prioritize them to build a society where its citizens and inhabitants will respect the diverse traditions and customs of Liberia and those of other nations and peoples.

Therefore, from all indications and research carried out, Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boikai is the better of the two candidates in terms of his level of experience, education, past records and service to the Liberian nation and people. I also give V.P. Boikai for his mature demeanor of tolerance and respect for the rule of law and the preservation of the Liberian peace process. This is one of the reasons Vice President Boikai remained silent not because he supported the corrupt behavior of Mrs. Sirleaf over the years he served as her Vice President. He did so to avoid further bloodshed in Liberia.

He did not openly oppose the President because he did not want Liberians to start running for their lives because when two elephants fight, the grass suffers. That is why V.P. Boikai continues to ignore Mrs. Sirleaf in her recent manipulative behaviors to provoke the papay in her desperate attempt to escape prosecution for her involvement in the financing, planning, and execution of the deaths of over two hundred and fifty thousand people during the Liberian Civil War.

Enough Is Enough!

Fellow Liberians and citizens of the world, enough is enough! We have given Liberian warlords and their supporters abundant chances to make amends with the Liberian people but they failed to express remorse or to accept responsibility for the consequences of their actions. We gave Charles Taylor a chance and he blew it in the wind.

We had several interim governments thinking that if those who perpetrated heinous crimes were given the opportunity to hold key positions of public trust they would reconsider and do what is right to restore peace and rule of law to post war Liberia. Instead, they continue to impose more hardships on the Liberian people and to make Liberia a lawless state where any and everything goes!

No, we cannot bear it anymore. While We have no malice against Weah and his supporters, we are asking those who are supporting the Coalition of the National Patriotic Party (NPP) and the former CDC that we once cherished to examine who are in front and behind the scenes.

Don’t you see Charles Taylor’s Commandos and feel “Octopus” II coming if we do not vote right on December 26th? Don’t you feel how they have again planned to destroy our Christmas this year and to upset our Lord Jesus Christ by scheduling the rerun a day after the birth of Christ is celebrated, just to disrespect our cherished Liberian religious celebration?

Well, we can turn the wheels around to please our departed loved ones who lost their lives during the civil war if we vote for Vice President Boikai and give him the mandate to bring to justice those who killed our mas and pas in cold blood but that are still ruling us with iron fists because of the atrocities committed by Mrs. Sirleaf and her supporters.

We can reform the CDC after Weah is defeated to make it the grassroot party that it once was. We can redeem the good name of CDC from the failure of the Weah-led CDC to honor the mandate of the Liberian people when they submitted their recommendations through the TRC report to the National Legislature when the CDC had majority votes in both Houses of the Liberian Legislature.

Therefore, in view of the foregoing, and in my own name, I unreservedly support the candidacy of Vice President Joseph Boikai because he is mature, he is composed, and has demonstrated leadership capacities to lead Liberia in the twenty-first century.

Please do not let Liberia and all Liberians down. Let us end violence and lawlessness in Liberia by voting for the man who is the Father of the Liberian nation and the advocate of peace, justice, and rule of law in post war Liberia. Vote for Vice President Joseph Nyumah Boikai as Liberia’s next President on December 26, 2017.
