FLASH BACK: 200 people onboard capsizes in Assam  – 28 Sep 2015

Guwahati, September 18 : At least 10 people including two women and six minors were killed when three boats capsized in Assam’s Goalpara district along with Meghalaya border on Sunday, when they were travelled during a storm that wrecked hovac in many parts of the state.

The incident took place at Bogilabhita area near Lakhipur along district’s border with Meghalaya during a boat race organised on the Saban river in Meghalaya’s West Garo Hills district.

Goalpara district Superintendent of police Amitabh Sinha said that, three boats of the race were capsized while a severe rainstorm hit the area.

The incident happened at around 4-30 pm as thousands of people gathered at the area to witness the annual race.

“The victims are from Goalpara district. We have already recovered 10 bodies. No one is reported missing,” the top police official said.

Meanwhile, police had denied the claims about as many as 10 boats had capsized and the casualties could be higher.

On the other hand, a motorcycle rider and a fisherman were killed during the Sunday’s severe storm in Guwahati.
