Man lived with woman’s dead body for 3 days while getting high, cops say

HOPATCONG — A borough man is facing charges after a woman living with him died and he continued to reside with her body and get high for three days last month, police said.

Officers found Matthew Schmarr, 35, of Hopatcong, in his bed and the body of the 52-year-old woman in another bed across from him when they investigated on March 21, Lt. Thomas Kmetz said.

Police went to Schmarr’s residence after receiving a report that he had sent a suspicious text to the mother of his child, Kmetz said.

Officers tried to get inside, but when they could not, they found a neighbor with a key, Kmetz said.

Investigators determined Schmarr had a juvenile in his care from March 18 to March 19, and that Schmarr drove to Paterson on March 18 to buy heroin, crack cocaine and cocaine, Kmetz said.
