NEW YORK – The man who shot and killed an New York Police Department (NYPD) officer in East Harlem in October 2015 was given a life sentence without parole Monday.

Tyrone Howard was convicted earlier this month in the shooting death of Detective Randolph Holder.

Holder, 33, and his partner were responding to reports of gunfire when they were approached by Howard.

Police say Howard then pulled out a gun and shot Holder.

Holder was promoted posthumously to detective.

More than 100 NYPD members crowded around Holder’s family Monday and packed the courtroom for the sentencing.

The judge told Howard he was a danger to the community. After four days of deliberations in March, a jury found the repeat offender guilty of all charges, including aggravated- and first-degree murder.
