Syrian forces advanced Monday in the northern city of Aleppo where they recaptured a southern district from rebels and carried out airstrikes against the last remaining areas controlled by the opposition fighters.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said that after government troops retook the Sheikh Saeed area they now control 90 percent of the territory once held by the rebels who seized the eastern part of Aleppo in 2012.

Both the Observatory and Syrian state media said thousands more people had fled the remaining rebel-held areas of Aleppo during the past day.
