STATEN ISLAND, N.Y. — The fourth annual Liberia’s Independence Soccer Tournament was nothing less than spirited Saturday, as three West African countries celebrated and displayed their skills at Corporal Thompson Park, in West Brighton.
The tournament, sponsored by Staten Island Liberian Community Association, Inc., brought together Island-base teams – Liberia, Ghana and Sierra Leone – and New Jersey-based Sierra Leone.
“We invited our West African neighbors because they came to our aide during conflict – Liberia Civil War – as peace keepers,” said Charles Cooper, the Vice President of the SILCA.
“We wanted to show our thanks and appreciation.” Liberia will officially celebrate its independence on July 26.
