London’s first Muslim Mayor Elected, Labour takes City Hall

uni1462610476{BNN / LONDON, U.K. – Sadiq Khan, a Muslim and Labour Party’s politician has reportedly been elected Mayor of London on May 7.

According to reports, Khan, the son of a Pakistani bus driver and seamstress, scored an overwhelming victory with 1.3 million votes over Conservative Zac Goldsmith, making him the first Muslim mayor of the dominant Western city.

Reports added that the victory also placed the Labour Party in City Hall after 8 years of Conservative control, with Khan hailing the win as one of “hope over fear and unity over division.”

Further, the win is said to resonate even further than City Hall, with the large British-Pakistani community being given a voice in effect, especially after suspicions rose against the community in the wake of the London transit system bombings.

Khan’s role as Mayor may also help to quell rising feelings of anti-Islam in the nation.

Reports state that the victory was welcome after a disastrous campaign against Conservative Zac Goldsmith, with the latter bringing up Khan’s religion as his key argument for support to be later heavily criticised by his supporters, including former Conservative party chairman Sayeeda Warsi.
