LIBERIA: Gender Ministry Pays Over L$18m In Social Cash Transfer

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has disbursed several million Liberian dollars under its Social Cash Transfer Program to beneficiaries.

Speaking to the Liberia News Agency recently in Gbarnga, the Regional Coordinator of the program, Sylvester Taylor, said the government throughthe United Nations Development Program (UNDP) and European Union (EU), generated L$52,465,600 for the program.

The money, according to Taylor, is intended to “put smile on the faces” of extremely poor labor constrained individuals, orphans, disabled, and also to alleviate abject poverty in Liberia.

Taylor noted that the Ministry has already paid 1,177 beneficiaries, amounting to about of L$18,568,000. Taylor said each beneficiary is receiving L$17,600 as retroactive payment for July, August, September and October.

“This means that each of the deserving individuals receives US$50 on a monthly basis,” Taylor stated. He explained that people who will not receive their benefit this payment period will get their money the next period, covering six months. Taylor praised community residents for supporting the team in identifying the rightful people to benefit from the social cash transfer.

The funding is been provided by the UNDP and EU through the Government of Liberia.
