Columbia Care is located on 14th Street near Union Square.
It will provide marijuana in the form of liquid extracts and oils to people with certain illnesses like cancer, HIV and multiple sclerosis.
Qualifying patients need to register with the state Health Department and must get certified by a state-approved doctor.
"We will have a state licensed pharmacist who will be on staff along with the rest of their colleagues and we will wait for patients to arrive to purchase New York State’s first available medical marijuana products," said Nicholas Vita, Chief Executive Officer of Columbia Care.
Columbia Care is one of eight dispensaries opening around the state Thursday.
Two more city dispensaries are eventually set to open in the Bronx and Queens in New York.
