Chimpanzees used for vaccine tests could die from starvation on Liberian island after American research center pulls funding

Chimpanzees used for studies that helped create a new hepatitis vaccine have been abandoned to starve on a small island after the founders of the research lab where they were tested pulled funding.

The New York Blood Center had been using the primates for research in Liberia since the 1970s, but ended experiments in 2005 and announced in January that the center had 60 days to find a new source of money.

Now 66 chimps on 'Monkey Island' are on a reduced feeding schedule and caretakers are working for free as they struggle to find the $30,000 a month to sustain the animals abandoned in March. READ MORE OF THIS STORY
