LIBERIA: Gender Ministry Reports 554 Rape cases in 2014

The Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection has reported a total of 554 rape cases in the country in 2014.

Montserrado County accounts for 428 cases, while the other 14 counties account for 126 cases during the period under review.

Making the disclosure at a meeting with the Health Committee of the House of Representatives Thursday, Minister Julia Duncan-Cassel revealed that 512 of the cases were perpetrated against children between the ages 0-17 years, while 42 were against persons over 18 years.

According to Duncan, 80 percent of rape survivors did not receive medical treatment from July to September due to the upsurge in the Ebola virus, while 20 percent were cared for mostly in Montserrado County.

“Three children – 10, 13 and a little over six years – died of rape in Lofa and Montserrado counties as a result of the health crisis in July,” she explained.
