The Special Representative of the UN Secretary General (SRSG), Karin Landgren, has pledged that UNMIL’s uniformed personnel including police and military forces, will support Liberian security agencies in ensuring safe and secure campaigning, voting and announcement of results.
Landgren said UNMIL remains a steadfast partner in supporting the aspirations of Liberians for fair and peaceful elections adding, “UNMIL has also provided logistical support to the National Elections Commissions (NEC) to convey election materials in a timely manner.”
The UN envoy’s pledge was contained in a statement issued Tuesday in Monrovia.
She noted that the role played by the Supreme Court demonstrates that Liberia is a nation where citizens respect the rule of law and resort to constitutional means to vent their disagreement.
“This augurs well for the peace and security of this nation," she said, adding "I am confident that Liberians working together in the interest of the country will succeed in conducting these elections peacefully and safely."
According to Landgren, the conduct of a peaceful election at this difficult time in Liberia will remind the world about the democratic progress the country has made.
Meanwhile, Landgren has reminded Liberians to keep public health issues at the forefront of the political process and adhere to the anti-Ebola measures outlined by the health authority and NEC.
