LIBERIA: Supreme Court Halts December 16 Senatorial Polls

Justice-in-Chambers Philip A.Z. Banks has issued a stay order on the December 16 Special Senatorial Election pending hearing into petitions filed before the Supreme Court of Liberia.

He has directed the National Election Commission (NEC) to inform all participating political parties and independent candidates to suspend all electioneering activities pending hearings into the two separate petitions filed before the court regarding the election.

The petitions were filed on November 24, 2014 by a concerned group of eminent citizens as well as the Justice and Public Interest Consortium, according to Information Minister Lewis Brown.

He told the Liberia News Agency Friday that Justice Banks has directed the Government of Liberia and NEC to respond to the petitions and the stay order by December 2, 2014, the date of the hearing.

Meanwhile, legal sources have told LINA that as the issues of election are Constitutional, the final decision will be made by the full bench of the Supreme Court.
