The Criminal Court “A” at the Temple of Justice in Monrovia has sentenced 23-year-old Augustine David to 15 years in prison for murder.
The petit jury, which comprised four women and two men, brought down a unanimous guilty verdict on August 29, against the defendant, after careful review of the evidence adduced at the trial.
Handing down the final verdict Wednesday, the Presiding Judge Johannes Zlahn said in his ruling that the evidence adduced at the trial established the essential elements of the crime of murder beyond all reasonable doubt and therefore supports the jury’s verdict.
Augustine David admitted committing the crime, but said that it was a mistake.
Judge Zlahn in his ruling said convict David was found guilty of the crime of murder pursuant to chapter 14, section 14.1 and (b) of the penal law of Liberia.
He added that all evidence adduced at the trial was sufficient to convict the defendant for the crime of murder, and that the jury’s verdict was supported by the weight of the evidence adduced at the trial.
He added that convict David will be sentenced to 15 years in prison, including the time he has already served.
Judge Zlahn has accordingly ordered the Clerk of Court to issue a commitment to the Sheriff for David to be sent to the Monrovia Central Prison where he will serve his jail term.
